Interesting facts about Lexmark

Lexington, Kentucky (U.S.) based Lexmark International Inc. was established in 1991 when it was spun off as an independent company from IBM. In the first few years of its existence, Lexmark grew at a blazing pace and quickly established itself as a major presence in the printer industry.

The vast distribution network that it inherited from IBM gave Lexmark an immediate presence in more than 150 countries. The company's IBM lineage gave it near instant brand recognition in a market dominated by technology titans with decades of experience and market presence behind them. Lexmark's introduction of the world's first inkjet photo printer with built-in CD burner, and the world's first inkjet printer for under £100 also quickly established it as an innovative company in the printer business. Over the last five years or so however, some of that momentum appears to have slowed down and the company has ceded back some of its early market share gains to other vendors.

In 2009, Lexmark reported revenues of £2.83 billion. Close to 60% of that originated from outside the U.S. The European market currently accounts for slightly more than 30% of the company's revenues. Lexmark employs close to 13,000 people, a vast majority of them located in manufacturing centers outside the U.S. In addition to selling Lexmark-branded products Lexmark also sells its printers to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who then resell the products under their brand names. One of Lexmark's biggest OEM customers is Dell Computer Corp. which has been reselling Dell-branded Lexmark printers since 2003.

From a product portfolio standpoint, Lexmark offers a vast range of printers ranging from relatively inexpensive models targeted at home and workgroup use, to high-performance systems packed with innovative features and functions. One example is the company's inkjet printer range which offers over three dozen models targeted at home, workgroup, home office and business use.
