Interesting facts about Epson
Epson's origins in the printer business can be traced back to 1961 when it was first established under the name Shinshu Seiki Co. The company was set up originally to supply precision watch parts for the Seiko Group. It quickly shifted to manufacturing printer technology as part of its relationship with Seiko. In 1968 the company released the world's first mini-printer which it called the EP-101. Shinshu Seiki formally changed its name to Epson in 1975 and caught the industry's attention in a big way five years later with the introduction of its MX-80 dot matrix printer. The product was a huge market success for Epson and it firmly established the company as a major player in the printer industry. Today Epson, with a 14% market share, is the third-largest printer vendor in the world behind Hewlett-Packard Co. and Canon.
In 2009 the Suwa, Japan-based Epson's revenues topped £8 billion with more than half of it originating in the Asia/Pacific region. The company employs over 72,000 people worldwide and offers a wide palette of high-tech products including PCs, projectors, precision instruments, and factory automation equipment. However, it's the company's wide-range of printer products that continues to be the standard-bearer for Epson.
Epson offers a range of inkjet printers for home users. One example of a relatively low cost option in this category is the Epson Stylus SX215. The printer is capable of printing a very respectable 34 pages per minute in black and white and an acceptable 15 ppm in colour. The Stylus SX215 features a 3.8 cm LCD viewer and memory card slots designed to enable photo printing without the need for a PC. The printer is priced at under £50, or about one-sixth the price of Epson's award-winning Stylus Color 800, which was the world's first 1400 dpi color inkjet printer when it was introduced in 1997.
