There are many criteria too look at when it comes to deciding on the best budget printers in 2013. Some look at just the initial cost for purchasing the printer, whilst others look for the cost of running the printer as a light user at home or a moderate user in a small business.
In this article I take a look at the best budget printers available for sale in the UK during 2013; using an initial price point of under £130 whether it be an inkjet or laser model. I also then look at the cost for each of the ink or toner cartridges required for the printer and how many pages the manufacturer claims the unit can print.

- That a “printed page” is the industry standard 5% coverage (actual yield will vary depending on images printed and usage conditions).
# HP Deskjet 1000 Colour Printer
An entry level colour inkjet printer from HP with a compact design and made from 30% recycled plastics. Weighs 2kg and measures 38 x 42.1 x 26.6 cm. First appeared in Sept 2010. No Wi-Fi or any other advanced features, just reliable mono/colour printing of your documents and photos. At £34.99 inc. VAT and shipping from Argos.co.uk This is a good bargain printer for a student!
Print quality black (best) up to 600 dpi and print quality color (best) up to 4800 x 1200 optimised dpi (when printing from a computer on selected HP photo papers and 1200 input dpi)
Print speed black (draft, A4) up to 16 ppm / Print speed black (normal, A4) up to 5.5 ppm / Print speed colour (draft, A4) up to 12 ppm / Print speed colour (normal, A4) up to 4 ppm.
The HP Deskjet 1000 takes 2 ink cartridges: Black and a Tri Colour, both are available in XL, which can be purchased from us as either as original HP cartridges or as quality compatible ink cartridges…
An HP 301XL black ink cartridge is £21.60 and prints 480 pages, so that is 0.045 pence a page.
A compatible HP 301L black ink cartridge by Jettec is £19.99 and prints 480 pages, so that is 0.042 pence a page.
…I recommend getting the 301XL each time to make that extra little saving in the long run
# Epson Expression Home XP-202
The Epson Expression Home XP-202 is an ultra-compact printer, scanner and copier that first became available in the UK in August 2012. At just £39.99 (inc.VAT and delivery from Amazon.co.uk) it is a low cost entry into colour inkjet printing.
The easy Wi-Fi connectivity allows printing from not only every PC and laptop connected to your network, but also from smartphones and tablets via the free EPSON iPrint app for Apple and Android.
The Epson Expression Home XP-202 takes 4 ink cartridges: Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow which can be purchased from us as either as original Epson cartridges or as quality compatible ink cartridges.
An Epson 18XL Black ink cartridge (11ml) is £16.99 and prints 470 pages, so that is 0.036 pence a page.
As the Jettec compatible Epson 18XL Black Ink cartridge contains 18ml and no page yield information is available, it is difficult to do a direct comparison. That said Jettec are quality ink cartridges and currently we offer the Epson 18XL compatible on a buy one get one free offer for £9.98 inc VAT.

# Samsung ML-2165W Mono Laser Printer
A 20ppm mono laser printer from Samsung that first appeared in January 2012.
This Samsung ML-2165W has a compact design, and ships with a “starter” toner cartridge that can print up to 700 pages – from then on you will need to order the standard toner cartridge (1,500 pages).
With built in wireless connectivity with Samsung Wi-Fi Direct devices such as a smartphone or tablet (via a free app), up to 20 pages per minute and a first page print in less than 8.5 seconds. This is a great budget laser mono printer that will cost you £59.99 at Argos.co.uk
# CANON Pixma MG5350 Colour Inkjet Printer
An All-in-One colour inkjet printer (print, copy, scan, Wi-Fi and auto duplex) from Canon that first appeared in August 2011.
This Pixma MG5350 is an advanced photo all-in-one printer with 5 single inks, high resolution photo printing up to 9,6000 and an intuitive interface with quick operation and 7.5cm TFT display that takes you quickly to the function you require. It also has Wi-Fi and AirPrint support so you can print from smartphones, tablets and Apple devices!
This is a great budget colour inkjet printer that will cost you £74.33 at www.shop.bt.com
The Canon Pixma MG5360 takes 5 ink cartridges: Photo Black, Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow which can be purchased from us as either as original Canon cartridges or as quality compatible ink cartridges.
A CANON CLI-526BK black ink cartridge is £11.99 and prints 660 pages, so that is 0.018 pence a page.
A compatible CANON CLI-526BK black ink cartridge by Jettec is £7.00 and prints 660 pages, so that is 0.011 pence a page.

# HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer
A 18ppm mono laser printer from HP that first appeared in March 2010.

The HP Laserjet Pro P1102w takes a single black toner cartridge which can be purchased from us: HP85A is currently priced at £59.29. At 1,600 pages per toner that would give you a cost per page of 0.037 pence.
If you can reduce this cost even lower by purchasing a Jet Tec recycled HP CE285A laser toner cartridge for £45.00. At 1,600 pages per toner that would give you a cost per page of 0.028 pence.
